The city of Sierra Madre has been rocked by the Matheson story. It is a tragic story in and of itself, but John Crawford has made it just that much more tragic by creating additional victims using his cyberbullying techniques.
John Crawford through the Sierra Madre Tattler is trying to link Matheson to the former mayor and two current city councilmen. People who try to defend the former mayor and the current councilmen are mocked, comments not posted, or then "linked" to the pornographer as well. The blog author claims he is offering a venue for political discourse, but I think he is actively taking part in cyberbullying, encouraging cyberbullying, and enabling other cyberbullies. These are techniques I think he uses:
- Misinforming - John Crawford's Sierra Madre Tattler includes contextually inaccurate reporting, lying, lying by omission, and repeating of rumors.
- Magnifying - John Crawford's Sierra Madre Tattler finds the smallest error and takes the most negative spin and magnifies it to become the whole story - damaging a victim's reputation.
- Using passive aggression - John Crawford's Sierra Madre Tattler appears not to be aggressive but uses passive means to be antagonistic and hostile. John Crawford posts anonymously on his own blog and multiple newspapers. He has a sympathetic ear at the Pasadena Star News who he has been feeding information.
- Creating an audience - John Crawford's Sierra Madre Tattler builds an entourage of followers to incite.
- Persisting - John Crawford's Sierra Madre Tattler is constantly digging at rather than fighting one-off battles.
- Using sarcasm - John Crawford's Sierra Madre Tattler uses sarcasm to humiliate and belittle.
- Being sneaky - John Crawford's Sierra Madre Tattler uses behind the back politicking to ensure a supportive audience when bullying more openly with less risk of exposure.
- Dividing and conquering - John Crawford's Sierra Madre Tattler uses a strategy of "you are with me or with him." You are either with me or a child pornographer. You are either with me or you are a defender of a child pornographer. John Crawford makes the supporters of bullying victims feel fearful of openly supporting the victim. He sends the message, "There is no way you can support Joe Mosca, John Buchanan, Josh Moran, or Nancy Walsh unless you are a supporter of child pornography or a child pornographer yourself."
- Aiding and abetting - John Crawford's Sierra Madre Tattler encourages anonymous attacks, and hides/supports their identity, and lack of responsibility.
I am going to take a stand against cyberbullying by pulling down the wisteriawonderland YouTube link of John Crawford. It was acerbic, and I should not have provided a link to it. I am going to make the transition to Facebook where anonymous posting is impossible, and it forces people to have real courage to attach their names to their comments. And I will take suggestions from the audience regarding anti-cyberbullying techniques because I am being genuine in my real desire to stop cyberbullying.
Cheers to taking a stand against cyberbullying! Happy Hanukkah!

I am offering a class to those who would like to learn how to identify a blog that is cyberbullying. Please see the event listing at the Sierra Madre Patch: http://sierramadre.patch.com/events/how-to-tell-if-a-blog-is-cyberbullying
I am re-posting a comment from a reader under this story because I think he/she meant to put it here:
From Anonymous:
Thank you for the information about cyberbullying. I support the political views that the Tattler promotes, but I do not like what they are doing to our town right now. I will be distancing myself from them. I will be telling John Capoccia and Chris Koerber to distance themselves from him during the upcoming election.
Thank you for spelling out what cyberbullying is. Maybe John Crawford didn't know what it was.
@4:39 Caroline Brown: I applaud you for using your real name. I would give more credence to your comment on The Tattler, except that you said these things about Josh Moran during John Crawford's unsuccessful campaign for the 2010 city council election:
1) "Josh Moran is not educated." (Did you forget driving him out to Claremont McKenna College when you taught out there? As you know, it is in the top ten list of best liberal arts colleges in the US - you can read about it here: http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/claremont-mckenna-college-1170 )
2) "Josh Moran just moved to Sierra Madre." (This was technically true, but you new the WHOLE truth but didn't reveal it when you went door-to-door spreading this 1/2 truth about him. You must have forgotten him growing up in Sierra Madre, going to the Gooden School, then teaching at the Gooden School for years with your friend Linda Thornton. Then he lived here for years and commuted to teach at Flintridge Prep. And you must have forgotten having dinner at the Thorntons with Josh Moran on several occasions over the years while he lived in Sierra Madre. He did do a small stint in Monrovia and moved back just as soon as he could - but you knew the truth.)
3)"He is a womanizer." (I'm curious where you heard this from. I don't know what to say about that, except, maybe good for him.)
Lady Wistaria isn't a person, she's a movement.
@8:11 Thanks! But it's Lady Wistar. Caspar Wistar was my great-great-great-grandfather, after whom the genus wistaria (or wisteria for the uniformed) was named. Cheers!
Wow, Caroline. I helped with John's campaign and really thought you didn't know Josh.
